Wilhelmina Barns-Graham made her name in the mid-20th century as a leading figure of the radical St Ives School in postwar Cornwall. But her long and varied career extended well beyond this timeframe, lasting up until her passing in 2004. She continued to be an innovator in her later years, delving into new territory that moved beyond her icy, spiritual landscapes into a bold new language of pure abstraction.

Intense, dark shades of purple like that of Purple Heart Linen  often featured in her late drawings, paintings and prints, providing glowing, ambient backdrops where dramatic, energized marks charge through space, or float as if caught mid-air.

At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 59 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.

The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

One of the ways I like to practice sustainability is by sewing zero waste garments, which is really satisfying. Like most zero waste patterns, this self-drafted extra puffy sleeve top is made up of several rectangles, using up just about 1.5 yards. I love the little keyhole detail at the center front that the straps create and the lovely drape from the voluminous sleeves that only linen can do. The pants were made with the remaining yardage – they are the #ZWBlockPant with the front fly hack by Birgitta Helmersson and they were really cool to put together. It's such a well thought out and highly detailed pattern, especially with the fly hack, and works beautifully with the midweight linen. I'll admit making these two garments wasn't entirely zero waste but I'm glad to report the resulting scraps all fit into my hand and will be used as stuffing for a floor cushion!
