French painter Gustave Courbet is best-known as the father of Realism,
who painted stirring portrayals of ordinary life and real working people
with great pathos and understanding. As such, rustic, naturalistic
browns like BROWN STONE
were a vital ingredient in his storytelling capacities, allowing him to
convey the earthy, rugged realism of life as it played out in 19th
century France. From brooding portraits to tense, dramatically-lit
landscapes, this deep brown appeared in many of his most celebrated
works of art, and became widely influential, shaping the color schemes
of painters working across French Realism and the Barbizon School.
At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 58 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.
Our FS Signature Finish was developed exclusively for us using a special process that makes this linen super soft with a comfy, classic look you'll love at first sight.
As a bonus, this process removes almost all of the initial shrinkage, giving you more fabric to get your projects done.
This finish makes the linen as soft as butter. Yep, 100% linen that feels and drapes and sews as no linen you have ever encountered. Because the fabric has been pre-shrunk for you - it will be less than the base cloth width.

One of the first linen fabrics I sewed with was a cheap version from a big box store. While I love the garment I made, I find it scratchy and stiff so it's not a garment I reach for often. On the other hand, the Fabrics-Store linen is soft, with the perfect balance of sturdiness and drape. It's not too heavy, and not too light. It washes beautifully and I think will only get better with age!

The 'brown stone signature linen' fabric is so soft and the color is one of my favorites! Matches so many other colors!
I just received this fabric--it was my first order, and I'm very impressed. The color is a rich, dark red-brown, and the weight is good for pants.
Finished Projects
I made the Arlo Vest by Sewing with Liliya and the Georgia Trousers by Vivian Shao Chen. The Arlo Vest has been on my list for a while. I love its versatility! Right now, in the winter, I can wear it with jeans and a turtleneck. Once the weather changes, I think it will look great with linen shorts or a mini skirt. And I really love the ties to cinch in the waist. I chose the Georgia Trousers because I have wanted to sew a pattern by Vivian Shao Chen since 2020. I find myself reaching for the trousers I have in my closet from ready-to-wear stores often, so I challenged myself with the Georgia. I think these two patterns look great together as a set, but will also give me a lot of wear as separates!

One hot wash and dry each, wanted to share a color comparison between TOP: IL019 All-purpose Brown Stone Fs Signature Finish - 100% Linen - Medium (5.3 oz/yd2) and BOTTOM: DB IL019 All-purpose Potting Soil Softened - 100% Linen - Medium (5.3 oz/yd2) Personal opinion: they're a lot more similar in shade than I thought, especially in indoor light. Brown stone is more "chocolatey" and formal; potting soil is more of an earthy Hobbit color.
The 'brownstone signature finish' linen is so soft and the color matches perfectly with the other linen fabrics found on Fabric-store.com!
