IL019 All-purpose Bleached Fs Signature Finish - 100% Linen - Medium (5.3 oz/yd2)
Bleached color is achieved by "stripping" the natural pigment out of the fibers( just like you would with bleaching hair). What you are left with is a very soft shade that is just ever so slightly an off-white color.
Bleached is the basics of any project and loves being dyed. It is actually what we use to dye the colors. A truly versatile base and a must-have addition to your fabric repertoire.
At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 59 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.
Our FS Signature Finish was developed exclusively for us using a special process that makes this linen super soft with a comfy, classic look you'll love at first sight.
As a bonus, this process removes almost all of the initial shrinkage, giving you more fabric to get your projects done.
This finish makes the linen as soft as butter. Yep, 100% linen that feels and drapes and sews as no linen you have ever encountered. Because the fabric has been pre-shrunk for you - it will be less than the base cloth width.

Customer Questions and Answers
If this is pre-shrunk, how wide is it in fact? How will I know how much to buy?
hello, this fabric is 59" wide and can still shrink up to 3% on the first wash and dry.
Do you have this fabric in 90 inches wide? Not sure how this fabric is used for bedsheets if the width is 90 inches on a queen size flat sheet but the fabric you sell is only 59 inches wide. Thank you
hello, We do not have this fabric in wider widths. When making sheets you can sew panels together in such a way that they aren't felt when slept on. We have figured this all out for you in our free sheets sewing pattern. Please search 'sheets' on the site to bring up the free pattern.
I am curious about your answer to the person who made sheets that got holes after 2 years. I bought some high quality linen sheets and had the same problem with the fitted sheet after just a year or so. I am considering this linen to make another fitted sheet but now uncertain. What linen do you recommend if I am going for longevity rather than the initial feel of the fabric? Is a heavy weight linen better for a fitted sheet?
If you want improved longevity, use a flat sheet for the bottom instead of fitted. Fitted sheets wear out more rapidly because of the body abrasion on them. Flat sheets that are rotated get equal wear and, therefore, last longer.
Super basic - As long as I am not planning to dye it, is there any reason to prewash your 'signature finish' (prewashed) linen fabrics? I just received my first shipment (and first ever purchase of linen fabric), and don't want to waste the water (I live in AZ) if prewashing isn't necessary.
Since this fabric may still have minimal shrinkage of up to 3% it is a good idea to prewash if you are making garments and other projects where you need the measurements to be precise. Otherwise it is a good idea to pre-wash any fabric or clothing item to remove any debris or lint residuals from manufacturing and handling.
Is the bleached signature finish fabric prepared for dyeing?
Hello, No, this fabric is not considered PFD, so you will need to pre-wash it with a 'pre-dye' detergent such as synthrapol to make it PFD.
Hi - I posted this question on March 25, and now have found that it has been removed, and I have not received any response. I purchased IL019 bleached signature finish linen in March of 2021; sheets were completed in Fall of 2021. I made two flat sheets, so that they could be alternated between top and bottom Now, less than 2 years later, both sheets have huge holes in them. Considering that linen is touted to have a long lifespan, I am extremely disappointed. We loved the sheets, but because of a lack of durability I cannot justify making another pair from this type of linen. Would a heavier weight linen that hasn't been softened hold up longer? What would be your suggestion? Thank you.
We have not removed this question we have received it in our main customer service area as well so we have put it on hold in this area. We are working on our response to you and will email you from there shortly where we can post a more complete answer for you . This question was received over the weekend when our offices are closed so our response time can be delayed by one business day.

would this be suitable for drapes?
The best selling weight for drapery , this is a perfect choice.
Is this good for making bath towels and kitchen towels?? Is it absorbent as the other linens?
We prefer our 4C22 heavyweight which is the twin to our kitchen towel fabric, but in the wider width. We recommend this fabric in our Milos Bath Towel free pattern.
can I really expect minimal shrinkage with this fabric? I still plan to pre-wash
Yes you can expect less than 3% shrinkage as opposed to our other linens that have a 7-10% shrinkage rate. Yes we do recommend pre-washing this to remove the residual shrinkage.
Wondering if this will take dye well? Wanting to ice dye linen to make a dress.
Several of our customers have used this linen with various dye methods with amazing results. We recommend testing the dye method with this linen before you start the project to make sure all is as it should be.
Is this soft enough to make a shirt?
Yes very much so with some of our customers letting us know it is a dream to work with.
This linen is so easy to sew, comfortable to wear, and an instant staple! I made the Augustine blouse today, made the Cara long sleeve blouse a few weeks before that and modified it by using the steps you shared for adding a button front. A few weeks before that , I made the Mariana jacket. Thanks so much for the beautiful fabric, amazing free patterns, and great instructions. The patterns are what motivated me to give linen a try and now I'm hooked!
I was thinking about ordering a heavier weight linen for pants/shirts but was reassured by the many claims that this fabric was just right for clothing. Beautifully soft but it is totally see through! Not good for clothing unless you plan to line it. Perhaps if you dye it, it would work. So disappointed... and I have 15 yards of it
Hello there, We're sorry the opacity of this fabric isn't what you had in mind. The fabric can be dyed and the darker colors are opaque, it's just the white and lighter colors have the typical light translucency, which is typical of medium weight linen. I generally wear a nude or white under garments when I wear white, but we undersatnd it isn't ideal for everyone. If you haven't washed the fabric and want to return it, please let us know via a call or email and we can help out there.
I made my wedding dress with 7 yards of this. It is obviously an unusual choice for a wedding dress but I love linen and it was perfect for our spring wedding. It has a lovely drape and feel, very soft but with good weight.
I bought this to make several different garments then dye them. The first garment was the Mona Trapeze Dress that I sewed, embroidered then hand-dyed a denim blue. It is absolutely my favorite dress! This fabric takes dye really well and I can't wait to make more items!
Great quality linen. Sews nicely.
It's official. I am incapable of sewing a basic. I *had* plans to create a nice simple Charlie Blouse, but...here we are with this angled color-blocked beautiful madness. What should have been a nice quick sew turned my project with three pattern pieces into nine, lots of confusion about what goes where, and twice the cutting time.
I made my wedding dress out of this Bleached Signature Finished 5.3 oz. It was a dream to work with and made such a lovely dress. It was simple, with a little detail on the back and bottom, and definitely a rare choice for a wedding dress, but I got so many compliments on the linen and how beautiful it was. It draped so beautifully but had nice weight to it and was cool enough for our outdoor spring wedding. I'm so happy with the choice of fabric, it made everything so special.
