IL019 All-purpose Asphalt Softened - 100% Linen Fabric - Medium (5.3 oz/yd2), Width 59"
Our best selling Grey for many years, this slightly faded version brings a vintage vibe to a tried and true color. ASPHALT
linen mimics the tone of Vicken Parson's cool, mid-grey shadows, a color
suggesting the concrete pavements, rain soaked bricks and hardened metal
of the urban jungle.
At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces this 59 inch wide 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.
The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

Customer Questions and Answers
Five Stars
I learned from other reviews that it's so important to zigzag stitch the cut edges before washing linen. You'll be amazed to find NO threads tangled up and fabric stretched out of shape. I love this asphalt softened for the color, feel and ease of handling. I made a couple tops, a shift and many bath/kitchen scrubbies. Love this color however it it a shade lighter than the picture.
I love this fabric which was the best investment for a quality, custom-made sheet set. I live in southern Mexico where tropical heat and moisture make it difficult to have comfortable bed clothes. This linen is perfect bedding material. I purchased a bolt of IL019 Asphalt Softened Middle and cut into manageable lengths for the preshrunk process. I recommend washing and drying 3 cycles. This will ensure fabric is shrunken, the weave is tight and the lint is removed. To make two flat sheets, I cut 2 equal lengths for each sheet, cut one length in half so to stitch vertical seams along each selvage edge versus a center seam. I allowed sufficient drape so sheet can be used as coverlet or tucked in. All edges were flat-felled and outer edges are 1 inch mitered. I also stitched up 4 pillow shams. To complete this project, I hand stamped foilage from an orchidea tree in acrylic paint along 1 edge of top sheet and 1 side of the pillow shams. Note: it may take a few washings to soften the painted fabric. I flip shams to unpainted side for sleeping and warm wash and line dry the bedding, which becomes softer and more comfortable with each washing. I am excited to start planning my next set of bed clothes, and have made a pair of matching drawstring pants for my husband. Can't say enough good about this fabric.
What a joy to find fabrics-store and order beautiful colors of linens to create hand-stitched items for my home! The extravagance of everyday items like kitchen towels in beautiful fabric feeds my soul. My 3 yards of IL019 softened asphalt color arrived today and I can't wait to make dinner napkins in this medium gray. The weight and color is perfect for my project. After washing, I'll skip the ironing and enjoy the luxurious bouncy density of them on my dinner table for holidays or any occasion!
I used IL019 Ash softened to make the Box Pleat Dress from Japanese independent pattern maker LINNET (Etsy Store Patternerie) and love the result. My photo doesn't do the fabric justice. The color is deeper grey than my photo reflects and very even. I can always count on IL019 softened to be less likely to get those wadded paper type of wrinkles through the day that other linen tends to get. This linen is so comfortable and soft.
