IL019 BLACK Softened - 100% Linen - Middle (5.3 oz/yd2) - 20.00 Yards
Sale price: $277.20 per item (10% off)
Darkness pervades Tacita Dean's artworks, falling over craggy rocks and epic mountains into inky, bottomless wells. BLACK Linen shares Dean's endless black, a colour that intensifies mystery and drama, cloaking and concealing everything it touches.
At a medium weight of 5.3 ounces, this 100% linen is versatile enough to be referred to as an All Purpose or Do it All linen. With its smooth look and tighter weave, this linen is neither sheer or heavy, but just the right in-between weight you will need for a variety of projects.
The cloth is Softened so we have added a softener to give it a silkier hand. The fabric has not been laundered so shrinkage will still have to be taken into consideration (shrinkage depends on fabric weave and laundering method).

The IL019 in black is one of my basic fabrics to use. Pants I made 3 years ago in Morocco pattern are an everyday favorite. Just made a black woven tee for a customer with it. Can't go wrong with this fabric, maintains its color after many washings and just keeps getting softer.
I purchased this linen to embroider designs for pillows! Love the look and feel of the fabric plus it laundered beautifully!
I buy quite a bit of the linen, mostly in neutral colors to use for machine embroidery designs on pillow covers, tea towels etc. I needed some black for some designs I will be framing. The linen gives a nice matt textured look that I was going for.
This is a very useful and easy to work with fabric. I've made a lot of things with it over the years. Prewash and dry hot to prevent shrinkage on your finished garment.
I've purchased the linen and canvas fabrics first out of curiosity then later because I just love the high quality fabric they sell. I've ordered at least 5 times in the past 2 months. Great products. Looking forward to buying more.
I wash it the way I prewash all my linens and dried on high heat. When I opened the dryer door, I was quite surprised. This fabric created so much lint that it completely filled my extra large dryer's lint trap. It has also coated the inside of my dryer with a thick layer of fussy lint. When I sew, the lints were flying like snow flakes in the room. It never happened to the other type of linen I bought here. I guess that this is because the fabric was "softened". I will steer away from this type of fabric from now on.
This linen washes beautifully and is a lovely shade of black. It gets better every time you wear it. I use it for making summer slip dresses and comfy pants.
I have used the IL019 in bleached white and been pleased with the fabric, haven't even seen with the black. On prewashing i unfolded and loosely gathered the fabric and wet it first before putting it in the washer and yet it still came out with "fold" lines creases and marks that did not disappear despite second washing. And the lint it generated when being dried filled the lint trap in my dryer to capacity both times. Makes me wonder about the quality of the fibres. Now I am left with 6 yards of "antiqued looking fabric" which is not what I wanted. Very disappointed with this purchase. Would attach photo but can't find capacity to do so.
I am sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the way your linen turned out. I will reach out to you directly to see what we can do to find a satisfactory resolution to get your project back on track.
Superb supple beautiful fabric, lovely after washing, too. I ordered a bunch and can't wait to create with it!
I finally broke down & ordered a printed pattern. I was very pleased with it. I used this fabric to make the capris & absolutely love them. A great fitting pattern that b is easy to sew up. I do wish you would feature medium size models also, It seems all that are shown are size 6 & 22. I'd love to see the fit in size 12 or 14, which is the average size of us ladies in the US..
This linen worked very nicely for the dress.
Once again I succumbed to a sale without a clear plan but I found it quite helpful to have a large quantity of black linen available when the whim struck to use it. I have made a couple of pirate shirts, some black wide legged Fifi pants from Style Arch and my kid made a 50's style circle skirt. Amazingly I still have some left and I look forward to deciding what my next project will be.
A beautiful linen that is the a great weight for many items. I made the Cielo top from closet core and it came out great. I washed in hot and dried before use and there was a lot of lint but it was 5 yards. I'm planning on making an Amy jumpsuit next with this.
This fabric is heaven. I'm a super novice at sewing and this fabric was really easy to work with and very forgiving. I made two pairs of really comfy, wide legged pants for my partner and I out of 5 yards with bits and pieces to spare. Someone more experienced could probably do it with less. I took the advice of pre-washing which helped me clean up the fabric a bit first before working with it, as it does fray somewhat. The end result is the most comfortable pair of pants I've ever worn that I could NEVER find in a store for the price I paid for the fabric. Will be buying this in every color as I'm able!
I am excited to use this linen to create some clothing...it is so smooth and soft! And I love the shade of black it is! I was worried (this being my first purchase from fabrics-store... but I am happy to say that the hype is not myth
Sorry to say, not what I expected or hoped for With the lighter threads it looks faded, like well washed. I should have bought a pastel or white. I'll just chalk it up to one of my internet purchase failures.
This is a gorgeous, soft fabric with a rich black tone. It is lighter than you might think and the tiniest bit see through, so if you like to wear colourful underwear, probably a good idea to line it. Very little shrinkage and a beautiful drape. I highly recommend it!
You just can't go wrong with classic black linen. This linen will be used for dress-making and I will also make an apron. Thank you for the fast shipping!
Amazing midweight fabric. It was a dream to work with and to wear. Made a helens closet gilbert top with it and it worked wonderfully. I will definitely buy more of this weight fabric for other clothing applications.
I just really, REALLY like having yards and yards of linen around!! I have it on my windows, piled on my bed, wrapped around my pillows, on the sofa, in the car - in some ways, I am loathe to cut it up!! Just wrapping yards of linen around myself in winter feels so good! Plus, since I have so much of it, I can strategically cut little neck and arm holes in it and just wear a wrap of linen all day long! I'm like a big, sloppy, walking, talking, mummied, linen hog! And the doggie bags! I love giving people linen "scarves" and showing them the head-wrap/face-mask trick I created to keep my breath from fogging up the windows inside the car in winter! And now, with covid - it works as a perfect but whole OTHER sort of face mask!!
I'm using this linen to sew a Spencer. I used a little starch to help it hold it's shape and it is turning out BEAUTIFULY!!! I highly recommend this product. I will be buying this is many other colors!
Beautiful color and hand. Washed and dried at high temperatures. It does produce a lot of lint, so check your lint trap regularly during the drying process. Have not made anything as yet but it is lovely fabric.
I am a Linen Lover, a connoisseur of flax fibers, and I Love! This! Linen! The hand and feel after washing are absolutely fantastic, and it doesn't fight when you try to cut it. I washed/dried mine hot and have not had any dye transfer issues so far - I would however recommend drying it twice, since all linen/linen blends shed a bit on their first trip through the laundry. My 6y chunk is currently being turned into a series of tunics and kaftans, but I will definitely be back for more when it's gone!!
I have just received my order the fabric is of beautiful quality. I look forward to some happy sewing soon.
I enjoy all of the linen pieces. The color is very nice on all.
I just purchased my second order of linen from fabrics-store. It is beautiful! I haven't sewn anything yet, but I couldn't be happier with the fabric.
I love linen for it's lovely drape and easy care. I used this black for a Lynn Mizono dress, Vogue pattern V1410. So easy to work with.
Lovely, drapey, OPAQUE, but not heavy fabric. I made a top out of it, and a split bottom potter's apron, and still have enough for another top. Fabric was surprisingly wide! Will order this weight again for clothing. Love it!
I'm a new sewer, but I just couldn't resist picking up some of this linen. And I am SO glad I did. It just arrived today, and I haven't made anything from it yet (but I have my eyes on one top pattern and another shorts pattern that this material will be perfect for!), but I have examined it closely. It is LOVELY! It will be absolutely perfect for the patterns I have in mind, it's the perfect weight, it's soft, and it will drape beautifully in both of my patterns! Can't wait to try it! And glad I got enough to be able to really play around with it! Thanks for a good purchase!
I have not cut into it yet, but I have washed and dried it and I really like the feel of it. I plan on making wide-legged pants and I think that it will drape very nicely.
Not as sharp black as I would like and a big coarser texture but hard to complain at this price. Using it mostly for wearable toiles .
Used this linen to make the Moroccan capris. This is the second pair of this style of capri I have made, I altered the pattern so they were a bit more fitted. Love how they came out.
Linen is one of my favourite fabrics to work with because of Its weight and robust texture. However, my favourite part about it is the way its creases around the body joints and its soft texture.
I was leering of buying fabric online (I like to feel it before purchasing) but thought I'd risk it with a small (3 yard) purchase. I enjoyed the feel of the fabric and the ease it afforded when working it. I ended up making a dress with it for my daughter. The first thing she said when she called to thank me was "The fabric is perfect." So I'll definitely be looking to make additional purchases.
I made a sleeveless shirt with remnants of this linen. It is versatile, cool modest and flattering.
I purchased this linen to make some tops using the free patterns provided by Fabric-store. It sews up beautifully.
I always buy my linen from Fabrics-store.com, and have never been disappointed. This weight is perfect for a host of apparel I have sewn, drapes beautifully, and I simply love it!
Purchased this fabric to sew up Vogue 1410 and it did not disappoint! Absolutely beautiful, rich color. Easy to stitch. I forgot to serge the raw edges when doing my pre-wash but I won't do that again! I'm going to purchase some more to make pants for my husband.
Beautiful weight and lovely to work with I have been using it for making bags.
To complete the holiday dining table, my daughter requested black linen napkins to coordinate with her Pottery Barn plaid linen tablecloth. I followed the color set recommendations of another customer by soaking the linen in a vinegar solution and then washed in a gentle cycle followed by a low heat dry and light iron. After trimming the salvage from both sides I cut twelve 17" squares along the straight of grain and sewed a tiny double fold hem on all sides, with tidy mitered corners. The table was perfect and the napkins washed beautifully afterwards. I was careful to remove them from the dryer before they were completely dry and they had that soft linen appearance everyone loves. If I want a more formal appearance I will give them a quick press with a warm iron.
soaking/washing in a vinegar-water solution can help; same for salt. try 1 cup vinegar and/or 1 cup salt. if you have a top-loading washer, just add to washer, agitate a few seconds, then soak 30 minutes before turning washer to \\\"wash\\\". if front-loading, soak in bucket, then put in washer. wash again with usual laundry cleaner. neither salt nor vinegar will harm the linen as long as it is diluted before putting on fabric. works for all colors.
I just received my third piece of black. I hope someone can tell me how to treat it this time to prevent fading. Only linen that disappoints.
I love the dark 019 linens! I'd been getting quite a pile that hadn't yet been pre-washed and, being LAZY, didn't want to stitch the cut edges so went looking for other options. it turns OUT - if you snip a small piece off the corners, about 1/4 inch or just enough to release the last couple of threads from the selvage so that they aren't anchored there, you can reduce the tangle of ravelling by a HUGE amount! How simple is THAT!! No need to stitch the cut edges!!! YEAH!!! I LOVE the internet and I love F-S Linens, TOO!!
I have only washed my fabric. It came out sooo soft. I can hardly wait to make my gown out of this, but right now real life is in my way...lol.
While I've ordered other linen before and have had success, this one disappointed. It faded, especially where the fabric had creases during recommended washing. When I told customer service I was unhappy, they would not do anything about it, despite their 100% happy guarantee policy. It wasn't until several emails later that they finally accepted the return, shipping on MY dime. I doubt they will even post my review based on my experience. I just wanted a nice, true black, linen and did not get it here. But customer service was even more disappointing than the linen. Condescending and rude.
This fabric is a staple of my linen clothing collection! It flows beatifully, looks great and feels good to the skin - and it is easy to machine wash-and dry - no ironing needed! ariana-skye.com
I have no complaints when it comes to anything I've made from linen purchased from this site! The colors displayed are as true to the color you order can be. I've made skirts, slacks, jackets, tea towel's, bed spreads and many other projects using linen. Not even one time did the linen disappoint me! It washes up beautifully and is a dream to work with!! :-)
It's perfect for so many things. I generally use it for clothing, but it's wonderful and versatile.
I make all kinds of garb for the SCA. This fabric is perfec for full pieces of garb such as tunics, dresses, and pants, but also makes wonderful trim to any garb! I ordered 10 yards originally and used it in less than a year if that tells you anything. As with any piece of fabric linen or not, you must prewash this fabric. I always prewash on hot and dry on high. After that I wash cold only and line dry. By washing hot and drying hot the first time you get out the excess dyes and get most of not all shrinkage done with so you don't wash it and suddenly your piece is 2-3 Times smaller than originally! Washes well and is so soft and comfortable. Breathes so amazing in the hot hot summer.
I have purchased this fabric twice so far, and I know it won't be the last time. My first purchase made a georgeous floor length cape for a friend. It is such a nice fabric to sew with. I am hooked on these linens!
This is beautiful fabric to work with. And I love that my orders always arrive quickly. The only thing that I think could be improved upon, is that sometimes the material is not cut on the grain. But I will definitely be buying more of this fabric.
A splendid black linen which retained it's true black color after washing, every bit as fine as the other linen products from Fabrics-Store. But ... you knew there was a 'but' coming! ... I gave it 4 stars because of the pre-washing I felt it required. As I'm combining it with lighter colored linens I wanted to be sure it didn't run on the final garments & so pre-washed it 3 times. It shed so much black dye & lint during drying that it permanently dyed the green tennis balls I use during drying to help dry large fabric pieces, & shed extraordinary amounts of lint. The linen is absolutely worth the effort but do be aware that some black dye lots MAY contain excess dye (my purchase was 11/2014). I washed on Hot/Hot, Normal cycle & dried on a medium dryer cycle: the linen came out beautifully each time but I do need some new dryer balls now. :) C'est la vie ... I won't hesitate to order this again ... a few dryer balls is a small price to pay!
I just prewashed and dried my piece of fabric. When I took it from the dryer, I fell in love. I think I like the texture, fresh from the dryer, well enough to make my pants with out ironing first. It feels so good and the wrinkling is soft an subtle.I am really eager to get started with the pants and want to order some more to make the half sleeve dress that was posted a little while ago.
I ordered this to make an exact replica of some shorts I've had for probably 25 years. They're beginning to show their age, but still perfectly wearable, but I've re-dyed them a few times & figure it wouldn't hurt to make a new pair. This fabric is just perfect - it's exactly the same weight as the original & I was absolutely tickled pink!!! I ordered this is 2 other colors to make replacements for 2 other pairs of shorts & I'm equally happy with them. In fact, I'm planning to order some other colors at a later date so I can make a few more pairs of these shorts - I live in them during the summer!!!
I bought three yards of all purpose weight black recently to make a pair of commissioned pants for a player in my LARP, Amtgard. I had never worked with 100% linen, but everyone swears by it, especially the veteran players, and especially in the Texas heat. My order arrived fairly quickly. I did notice that when I washed this linen (asking with three years of tawny port purchased at the same time) that the fabric sheds a LOT during the first few washes--my lint trap was full after the initial wash and after I washed the finished product. (I know some people tell you to hang dry, but who really has time for that? :D) The linen was very easy to work with and had a comfortable texture immediately after the first wash. Using approximately 2.5 yards of the fabric was plenty to make a pair of very poofy pants about 50" long. My customer seems pleased with his purchase.
I buy 7 yards or IL 019. Cut in half to 3.5 yards. Trim one selvedge off each piece. Machine a French seam the trimmed edges together. The pull some threads for an on grain top and bottom trim and do a wing needle hemstitched hem a the top and a simple machine sewn 1/2" hem at the bottom... Less than an afternoon... Do you know how much these would cost at a department store? IF you could find something like this!? You've just made yourself a $500.00 sheet for under $75.00 and an afternoon of easy sewing with a basic machine! THis will fit a queen sized bed with a deep mattress!
I've been a \"consumer\" for a number of years now, I live in the south and this fabric is essential for our weather. I use it all year round. I love this web site, the tutorials, the product. I shop the sales now because of shipping costs, but my home is a haven of linen. I belong to a sewing guild and have shared this site with many people, my only regret is that there isn't a \"linen Knit fabric\".
I love this linen! It is soft, easy to work with and a dream to wear.
I have not yet made up this fabric, but the look and feel lets me know I will love working with it and wearing it.
Great Fabrics very easy to work with, it has very few slubs,if any that are seen, always beautiful finishes, me and all my customers are very very satisfied, vist at ebriykhoq.com
Love this fabric. Linen is my fav fabric. Made Capris. I no longer wear shorts, (Medication makes awful bruises} and this is perfect weight. I love the feel and the weight is still cool for warm spring days and summer. washes and drys great I'm in love with Linen.
THIS MATERIAL, WAS GREAT. I SOLD IT TO MY CUSTOMER AND SHE LOVE IT. SHE MADE A LONG BLACK DRESS AND SHE LOVE THE WAY IT FEEL. THANK YOU INSPIRED
I ordered this online, and was not sure what I would get...I received the fabric quickly and love the feel, weight, and texture of this linen. I ordered it to embroider on, but have not had a chance to try it yet, but given the quality of the linen, I am sure that it will work beautifully!
My first try with (black) Linen Dishtowels was so satisfying - I machine embroidered with a white design and the result was striking. That set became a Bridal Shower gift, and I immediately re-ordered the black to make another set. The linen has a good hand, irons like a pro, and is a perfect "canvas" to Machine Embroidery Artistry!
I bought this on the 20 yard bolt special. It has washed up very well and is extremely soft. IL019 is a wonderful fabric!
The IL019 black made beautiful drapes & roman shade for a man's study in a house I am working on. Gorgeous! I washed some of the leftover & am making some garments out of it.
This softened black linen worked well for the Taylor Swing Blouse. I have enough left for pants, and I'll embellish both with the same printed cotton on the seam bindings and facings to tie them together in a cute way and make them less bland. I also will order more of this black linen for a jacket to be lined with a printed cotton and embellished on the outside with silk kimono scraps and sashiko hand stitches. Stay tuned!
Akira Wrap Jacket made in IL019 Black Softened Linen. In my 10 years of sewing, I can say with confidence, there are few fabrics I love more than classic black linen. I keep coming back to it. Pair it with vintage cotton denim and a natural vegetable tanned leather bag, you have my ideal wardrobe. I love this linen! I used the linen tank top pattern, but lengthened and flared it out to make an A-line dress. I made several napkins, and guest towels also. I don't like using paper napkins so I use up leftover linen to make every day napkins; I have them in black, natural, potting soil brown, sphinx, and pink!
I absolutely *love* this black. It's soft and supple. I used IL019 Black to make a 14th Century Cotehardie to wear at Jousting Tournaments and at SCA activities. I've still got a few yards and plan on making another dress, or maybe using it as lining for a hood. You DEFINITELY want to pre-wash this linen by itself, as it took 3 washes for me to really get the color set and not bleeding, and I did not notice any fading (I used Woolite and hot water and dried on high. I am really hard on my fabric and needed to make sure it would hold up to use. I've had no trouble with it since washing).
I used this IL019 black softened linen for this bustled overskirt. I love it - the color has depth and did not fade with washing, and the weight is perfect. I use this linen year round in eastern WA (where we have 4 very defined seasons). It doesn't get static-y with tights in winter and is breathable in summer. Highly recommend.

Love this linen. These pants are comfortable and versatile. I can dress them up or down depending on what I wear with them.

I found the buttons, fell in love, so I had to make this tunic to go with....perfect match:)

Just finished this throw of IL028 874 BLACK-NATURAL, 3/4" bias tape made of IL019 to give it a crisp break against the very rustic binding....1st linen throw I have made but it won't be the last. I love the weight and this is year-round perfect for Texas heat.

This linen worked beautifully for this dress.

I made a Gilbert Top by Helen's closet with this linen and it is very very comfortable. It was easy to work with, although it frays a lot. Expect to have your room littered with black particles (or overlock it first). Can't wait for summer now!

I used this black linen for pants which easy to sew. Enough left over to make a keepsake teddy bear. The embroidery looked so beautiful on the black linen

A dress from a Lynn Mizono vogue pattern, V1410. Very easy to work with and no need to iron, I just hang it to dry after washing.

McCall's 3117 Tank made with BLACK Linen

This is a three-piece ensemble. Something that I would typically work in. Comfortable, stylish, representative & uniform. When you have your uniform on it means you are working when you take it off you stop working. But also it saves me from thinking about what to wear everyday lol.

Made with smock of l19 white optic linen, the kirtle is a heavier duty firecracker red linen (not visible) But the gown is all this beautiful L19 middle weight linen in black and just wonderful stuff! The bonnet on my head, under the veil is also this same weight in linen.

These are some cross stitching done on the black linen that I think is beautiful and so easy to work with. The cross stitch was machine done and the designs are from Sudberry- Sue's Halloween cross stitch. So easy to whip up guest towels or a wall hanging with the ivory linen!

I made this top with medium weight linen fabric and embroidered around the neck, armhole and hem. To give an hour-glass shape, I stitched armhole and bust darts. Medium weight linen is ideal for fabric for embroideries, I just love it.

I had 1/2 yard of medium weight (IL019) fabric left over and had to come up with a creative way to use it. So, I got 3/8 yard of printed calico fabric to use as a yoke and added red/yellow strip to blend everything. Turned out cuter than I expected!

I love working with this linen, even with French seams the fabric drapes beautifully. I originally planned to do napkins with this but so happy to wear it instead.

We are a Modest Hebrew Garment Company, extendending our skills and services to the entire Yisraelite community, in providing the children of Yisrael a Return to A culture that is Rich & Qadosh (Set Above The Common & unclean) and rooted in TORAH, with a variety of modern Eastern Styles Of Kuttonet'ot (Tunics) with Tzitziyot and Miknac'ot (Trousers), and now Garments for the Ahkotin (Sisters) Kuttonet'ot & Shool'ot (Tunics & Skirts) In fulfiling the Mitzwah (Commandment) for Tzitziyot.

I made this for my son. He started in reenactment & wanted the jupon made with his colors. This is the finished work.

This linen is by fair my favorite to work with. It is such a joy! The hand is so soft and the drape is lovely. It is the perfect weight not to light and not to heavy.

Made form the L019 Black softened. A Hebraic tunic for worship purposes or casual wear. Also a matching pair of drawstring pants were made from slightly heavier weight linen. zipporahreshel.com/showcase/
