Bleached color is achieved by "stripping" the natural pigment out of the fibers ( just like you would with bleaching hair). What you are left with is a very soft shade that is just ever so slightly an off-white color.
Bleached is the basics of any project and loves being dyed. It is actually what we use to dye the colors. A truly versatile base and a must-have addition to your fabric repertoire.

Fluffy, dimensional, and simply a joy to live with - you’ll feel like a sewing maestro when you pull this cloth out of its first dry cycle.

The fabric arrives 84 inches wide, flat and with a subtle basket-like weave. This weaving technique comes with a delightful surprise once it goes through its first wash and dry.

The threads that are woven to make the outside of the squares - they “lift up”.
The threads that are used to weave the inside of the squares - those “drop-down”.

You get a cloth that looks like squares of a freshly made waffle deliciousness. It is just that yummy!

This cloth is wider than our usual selection at 84" wide.  Once it is washed - the cloth will shrink to get that dimensional waffle surface.
Approximate shrinkage - the width of cloth shrinks 17% (weft of the fabric) and 28% on the length ( warp of the fabric). Shrinkage is based on a warm wash and low-heat dry.

Waffle weave cloth is great for:
- Bath towels
- Robes
- Throws
- Duvet covers
- Pillow shams
- Lounge garments
- Decorative pillows
- Curtains
- Beach towels
- Picnic blankets
- items that need to have dimension and softness

Descriptions of waffle colored fabrics say softened but bleached does not. Will bleached end up as soft as colors?

Teresa • March 6, 2023
Maureen profile image F|S Team

Yes with wash and use the bleached will soften - it may take a wash or 2 more. Please take a look at our new Eco Friendly fabric softener fabrics-store.com/more/eco-friendly-fabric-softener-volume-3.5-oz-scent-unscented

I'm curious why I am unable to leave a review. I bought 3 yards of this and used the tutorial to make towels. I can honestly say I have NO idea what everyone loves about this fabric. It is/they are beautiful to look at, but they are not at all absorbent, super scratchy, extremely thin, and the lint! Good lord, the lint! Filled my dryer vent and hose to capacity the first two times I washed/dried. I keep washing and drying hoping they will get softer and more absorbent. All I get is more and more lint, all over the laundry room, sprinkled in the bathtub, clinging to my skin. My biggest question now is what else might I do with this fabric now that it's been washed and waffled? IMHO, it's useless as towels.

Thanks for leaving this Q&A and I'm sorry you aren't able to leave a review about your experience with the waffle weave fabric. We've found customers who wash and dry this fabric on hot or 'high' and normal settings will experience a great deal of lint. This fabric is designed to be washed on cool/warm, in gentle cycles with a free and clear style detergent free from optical brighteners. The fabric is made up of 100% cotton and linen which are very absorbent, but we understand that not everyone will find this type of fabric to their preference. I will reach out to you via email, so we can work this out. Thank you.

Once you wash and dry it does it restretch? I have some sweaters and a few other things that once you put them on they stretch and really hang. I want a robe/cover-up but don't want it to end up dragging on the floor. Thanks.

No, this product shrinks to create the puckered waffle look and holds its shape nicely once it is washed and dried.

Before washing, what size would I cut the fabric for regular towels, ~28"x54"? I don't want a bath sheet. Thank you.

One person was worried about cutting and sewing after washing. Just steam iron and it will become almost completely flat. Easy peasy to continue on with the preshrunken fabric. Good luck!!! And I made towels and washcloths with mine. LOVE them and will be making LOTS more. Thinking Christmas gifts, so will need a good sale. Hint hint hint. :)

I want to make curtains hung with clip rings for my barn house out of the waffle fabric. I know I saw someone mention how they make theirs and I can't find it.

Anne • August 16, 2022

The only reference I was able to find for curtains was a previously posted picture where the waffle was paired with another linen - I will email you the picture, but the customer did not go into detail on the process she used.

I see where a couple of shoppers have used this waffle weave to make a King size comforter. I would like to do that but want to ensure after washing it, that it will still have enough drop to cover the bottom of my King size, 14 inch deep mattress plus the top of a bedskirt. How many yards should I order, what size should I cut, recommendations for seaming to make it large enough, etc.?

Susan • April 8, 2023
Maureen profile image F|S Team

I spoke with our in house sewing and pattern consultant, Lauren who recommend 8 yards of fabric, 4 yards is used for the center panel, and 2 side panels are cut from the remaining 4 yards, this is from the washed fabric. If you want to do it with the unwashed fabric, you can use the shrinkage rates as a guide, or you can email Lauren at askfabrics-store.com. There are a number of methods for seaming listed in the help center article here: support.fabrics-store.com/hc/en-us/articles/4422004938381-Sewing-with-your-IS010-Waffle-Weave-Fabric

I am planning to dye the cloth and make towels. Should i pre wash after sewing and then dye? Or should I d I dye the cloth and sew the towels after?

Fredrika • October 18, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

Great Question! If sewing with polyester threads, they won't take up the dye like the rest of your fabric. So, with this in mind you will need to cut and sew first using a thread close to your desired color. Wash to remove any debris from the cloth and to provide a clean surface for the dye to adhere to. Remember to use a dye specific pre-wash, a drop of dish soap, or free and clear style detergent without any brighteners or softeners as they can interfere with your dye.

Why is this sample so much more expensive than the others?

Mary • August 18, 2023
Lauren profile image F|S Team

This fabric's samples are larger than the ones we cut for the plain woven fabrics. This way, you can clearly see the weave of this fabric.

My favorite bath towels

I used six yards to make 4-42"x80" bath towels and one very large bath sheet. Super easy to cut and sew. Love the texture after laundering - very absorbent and fast-drying. The best bath towels I've ever had, without a doubt.

Magical fabric!

Wow, I love this fabric! I made my first set of towels today and they are so wonderful -- the transformation after taking it out of the washer is magical. And sewing them prior to washing was a breeze. I think some family members are getting towels and throws this holiday season :)

Magical

Oh so fun to see the change in the fabric from sewing to after washing. Easy to sew and then soft and squishy after wash and dry. 3 yards will give you 2 oversized towels, 1 oversized hand towel and 2 washcloths. I had enough left over to make a small drawstring bag to put in a bar of soap (home made goat milk soap). I adjusted the towel to 2" shorter (for those slimmer peeps in the family) which gave 2" more width to the hand towel. 10 yds gave me 6 towels, 6 hand towels and 8 wash cloths. Along with 3 of the small draw string bags. I ended up making 6 sets of towels in total. (It's going to be a linen Christmas this year). This is my new fav fabric and can't wait to make a couple of blankets. Love love love this fabric!

3 yards of IS010 cut in half and hemmed make for the most scrumptious, lovely, huge bath sheets you could ever dream of. I made small face cloths and fingertip towels from a doggie bag find. I splurged and bought enough to make a big sheet for our king bed that is our blanket in the summer and sheet in the winter. It's our absolute favorite bedding piece.

Lizabeth • July 20, 2023

A bleached waffle blanket, IL020 bleached sheet set, and the gorgeous jacquard print for a coverlet at the bottom of the bed!

Janelle • July 17, 2023

5.3 oz. Love it. Sews beautifully. I recommend pre shrinking. I hang to dry when damp. Run it thru the dryer a few minutes.

Patricia • May 22, 2023

Bleached white 5.3 linen.

Patricia • May 15, 2023

I made a bed cover for summer (Atlanta=hot!) and a bath sheet from the bleached waffle fabric and med weight contrast linen. I did not pre-wash. I had less than the expected shrinkage after 3 washes and dries. Lots of lint though, which I was expecting. I use a front load washer and used first low, then med heat. My 50-year old Singer and I had a fun day! I am very pleased!
