Malena Pattern Collection - Short Dress, Long Dress, and Blouse Sewing Pattern (Premium Paper)
Description:
The Malena Pattern Collection is F|S’s interpretation of the timeless silhouette of the A-Line Dress.
Since the creation of this style in the 60's, this form has been a constant both on runways and in wardrobes alike because it flatters such a variety of figures and is suitable for most, if not all, occasions.
This collection comes with 3 garments: a long dress, a short dress, and a blouse with all 3 items paying homage to the female form. The garments have fitted shoulders, one of the key elements of the A-Line style, cinched waist where appropriate, and an a-line skirt that can be tightened or relaxed at the waist by adjusting the size of the reversed waist and bust darts.
The dresses have a collar with a partial placket and button closures that keep the upper portion of the garment classic giving full attention to the designer’s interpretation of the bust and waist darts.
The blouse features the same collar and partial placket details as the dresses. However, we reversed traditional tucks on the bodice to emphasize the figure and carried these reverse pleats from the bodice to the sleeves adding refined touches to the overall look. The blouse will be a great addition to any trousers or skirt and can be worn under a tailored jacket, or to the beach - you will be comfortable for both.
While each garment maintains the relaxed fit F|S incorporates into pattern collections, the partial placket, bust and waist darts, reversed tucks, and collar with stand follow the curves of the body emphasizing the silhouette and the feminine form. You guide and control how much attention is given to any portion by controlling the depth and the facing of the pleats and tucks.

Customer Questions and Answers
I'm working on the longer dress and have discovered that it's clearly designed for someone who is taller than I am (I'm 5 ft 3 inchs). I've had to take up the shoulders by an inch front and back to get the waist darts to lie correctly. I haven't put in the sleeves or the collar yet because my fiddling has changed the neckline and arms-eye significantly. I wish there were measurements on the pattern for back-waist length and markings on where to take up what I need. If I make the pattern again - was thinking about the blouse, any help on where I can make adjustments for a short person would be greatly appreciated!
Hello! Yes, our pattern are drafted for a height of 5'6" or around 170cm, So adjustments will need to be made to the pattern to adjust for your body. We recommend sewing a toile for any new pattern so you can diagnose where these height adjustments should be made for your unique body. If you would like further assistance with this, please email our in-house seamstress for a 1:1 fit consultation. Ask [at] fabrics-store.com
Where is the yardage for for Malena?
You can find the yardage in the size chart which is located on this page. The link can be found under the price, next to the photos.
Are there pockets?
Yes, there are inseam pockets included in this pattern for the dresses.
I would like to make this dress and not have to line it. Would the rustic linen be the best weight to buy? Thanks!!
Our medium weight and light weight linen fabrics are opaque in the mid- and dark-tones, which are used for the samples photographed here. If you need white and light colors, the 4C22 heavyweight will be opaque.
I'm interested to make this blouse. Would it still look like a blouse / oversized shirt if I took out the pleats/darts?
Hello, When you remove the tucks from the front and/or the darts from the back the blouse will not have any waist shaping, and give a loose boxy look.
Lovely! I'm curious about the "Advanced" level indicated; this looks to be a fairly simple dress. What aspects are advanced?
We consider making the partial placket to be an advanced skill, so we have labelled it accordingly. Of course, difficulty of certain sections will vary person to person.
My bust is more like an 18, but everything else is 12-14. What size range should I order?
Hello, If you are between sizes it is a good idea to consider comparing your upper bust measurement to the size chart to see if you will need a full bust adjustment (so you will be ok with a smaller size) and consider the finished garment measurements to check the ease in the garment. Anyone interested in our premium patterns can email us with their measurements to get a size suggestion.
Love this dress! Do your patterns include adjustments for short people (I am 5 ft). I am a sexist with 50+ years of experience, but appreciate indications/directions for adjustments.
Hello, All of our premium pattern come with 1:1 support from out in house seamstress to help you through any adjustments you may need, for any body tpe.
From reading the sizing information, it appears that this pattern runs larger than equivalent sizes in ready made clothing. I wear a medium, generally size 10 in shirts, an 8 in most pants and jeans, but I am unsure whether to order the 2-8, or the 10-16. Susan
Hello Susan, We recommend you compare your body measurements to the size chart rather than comparing clothing sizes as they aren't standardised. If you need help with this please email us and our in-house seamstress can help you find your best size. Just let us know your measurements.
What cup size are your patterns drafted for? Are the 18-24 sizes drafted for a larger cup size? I currently wear a 40I bra in RTW, a 40G in self made, and want to know if I will need a full bust adjustment to make this fit properly
Our new patterns list the upper bust and full bust measurements so you can compare those and see if you need a bust adjustment.
What is meant by 'fitted shoulders'? I would love if the adjustment (or instruction) to keep the seam from drooping off the shoulder is included. Thanks,
Hello, this pattern includes set in sleeves with a small gentle drop. The shoulders of the bodice are fitted. Due to the wide range of adjustments that can be made for any one body, we do not provide alterations instructions in our booklets, instead we offer 1:1 fit advice with our in-house seamstress who can help you fit the garment to your body.
This is lovely- I have been waiting for garment patterns with tailoring! I am short and feel better in garments that are fitted. Would heavyweight linen be to heavy? Thank you!
Hello, Thank you for the lovely feedback. I think this design may be too bulky for our 4C22 as the partial placket is made of of many layers. So our IL019, 1C64 and IL020 are the best fabrics for this pattern.
I am a plus size woman. I really appreciate it when you had a plus size model to help me visualize a garment on myself. Besides that, she was adorable. Please bring her back!
I am a W size 16 and 18. Which size pattern would you recommend for mage
Hello, We recommend you compare your body measurement to our size chart to help you select the right size for you. If you need assistance, please email us your body measurements and our in house seamstress can help out.
Which weight of linen would work best for this dress? IL019?
