Worked up as a 16th century flat cap. IL020 Bleached makes up the embroidered coif underneath the hat. Had to wash the red well to prevent bleeding. This fabric works up so nicely for period shirts. I've used it for 16th century & 18th century styles. This piece show is a Tudor smock with neck and wrist box pleats. Washing does indeed increase softness. See more photos at: http://www.dazeoflaur.com/blog/?p=1855

I used this beautiful striped linen for a 14th Century Gothic fitted dress. I also made buttons from the striped linen I also made a black panel for the bottom (hard to see in picture) as well as a lining from IL019. It felt great against the skin and washes very well.

This is based on a dress from around 1912. We were invited to a themed wedding and I made it for my daughter. I love that I can wash and press the dress and it doesn't have to go to the cleaners. The feel of it and how well it breathes are perfect for an active 3.5 year old. It was worth every minute I spent making it. People stopped us on the street to compliment and take photos of her.- Amy

I loved this fabric, unfortunately this picture does NOT do this dress justice. It made the colour appear a little too bright..almost tomato. I don't like this particular chemisette with it either but my dress form is red so it was neccessary. There's over 20 hours of embroidery around the bottom, but the fabric hangs beautifully and is easy to work with. Hopefully I can get someone to model it for me soon so I can get a better picture. laststitchdesigns @ gmail.com

The close up detail is free motion machine stitching on the front band of the jacket. I lower the feed dogs on my sewing machine and use a darning foot and just move the fabric with my hands. It's like drawing with thread. This is what many quilters do on their quilts. Since I don't have batting like quilts have in the front band, (which prevents puckering), I put the part that I am sewing in an embroidery hoop to hold the fabric taught while I draw with thread.

Using designs from Annthegran.com, as well as my own drawings on my Janome sewing machine, I created these tea towels for my special friends who appreciate such old fashioned customs. The medium weight white linen received the embroidery positively beautifully! I highly recommend the fabric - the nubbs are quite fitting for a good linen. To me it says it is truly 100% Linen.

Jenn recommended you all when I started getting into costuming and was a bit frightened of purchasing let alone cutting linen. Well your prices were so reasonable I didn't have a (complete) heartattack ordering or cutting into it once I got it. I have since ordered many times and LOVE everything I get. For me I used the 3.5 oz linen used for the gomlek (chemise) with the 5.3oz used for the blue chirka (coat)as well as the rust colored one underneath it. Great stuff and service! Thanks!

This is the household fighting tunic I made for my husband. It is worn with real armor in simulated combat within the SCA. This linen hangs beautifully, and is durable enough to stand up to the beating it takes constantly, unlike other fabrics I've used in the past (from other suppliers.) I already knew your handkerchief white made an awesome chemise or kirtle. Now I'm looking to try some of the others you carry. (and Thanks to his Knight and his Lady for suggesting it.);-)

This project was to produce a replica 16th century “rounde gowne”. A “rounde gowne”, in the parlance of the day being, a gown without a train. The inspiration for this gown comes from a small element of the border decoration found on one of the 546 town plans, views and maps that were issued in 6 volumes - published by Georg Braun and engraved by Frans Hogenberg, called the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. The particular map where this image is located is the Lyon map, published around 1572. The style of this gown is fairly typical of a style seen during the 1560’s and 70’s. The "gowne" encompasses the entire ensemble, from the skin out, consisting of chemise, drawers, stockings, garters, shoes, corset, farthingale, bum roll, petticoat, foreparte, kirtle, laced in sleeves, partlet, “suit of ruffs”, hat, jeweled girdle, and miscellaneous accessories. In the wording of late 16th century English royal inventories, this gown might be described as: Item one rounde gowne of Abraham colour woolen broadcloth lyned with saffron yellowe Holland having a brode border down the front and about the skyrtes of black vellatt. Item one foreparte of a kirtle with a paier of sleeves of orrendge brocadee lyned with orrendge Holland cloth. This gown is entirely lined in IL020 Taxicab linen, although the color swatch does not match the actual color of the fabric. The chemise and drawers are made of IL019 white linen. The corset is made of IL077 white linen. And, the sleeves and forepart are entirely lined with an orange linen that I bought here at Fabrics-Store.Com and top-dyed to match the brocade.

I used Kwik Sew 2674 to make this blouse. The pattern is actually for a big shirt, but I added numerous darts (two bust darts in front, four vertical darts in front, and nine vertical darts in back. This is a picture of the back of the blouse. I love the way it kind of flares out at the hem, with all those darts in there. Of course, the linen behaved perfectly. :o)

Made another one from the Kwik Sew big shirt pattern 2674, making it 8 inches shorter (high-hip length), adding six vertical darts (four in front, two in back), and making 3/4-length sleeves. That pattern may be discontinued, I'm not sure, but you can always depend on Kwik Sew to manufacture well-drafted patterns (sleeves go in easy, shoulder cut well, armholes don't hang to your waist, etc). This fabric has a nice weight and drape. It makes the shirt feel more like a jacket and should hold up fairly well as far as wrinkles (keeping in mind, it IS linen). I always wash/dry at least twice before cutting, sometimes three times, and that softens things up considerably, which also cuts down on wrinkles. The green is a nice shade. As my dad has told me on numerous occasions, "You don't look good in green!" Some of them, though, I can get by with, if they're not too yellow, too lime, too olive, too whatever. This is just a nice basic green/white weave, like a spring green but slightly darker. Looks good with silver jewelry. Ambiance honeydew is a good match for the lining. (My initial plan was to make a lined jacket, but I got in a hurry and made a basic shirt instead.) I should have interfaced the button fabric before making the covered buttons, but I didn't want to mess with it. As it is, you can see the metal through the button fabric slightly, but if that's my biggest problem, then I'm doing all right. :o)

I wanted a loose-fitting, yet not sloppy, shirt pattern to use for summer, so I rummaged through my considerable stash and found Kwik Sew 2674. It's described as "loose fitting," although I would call it "very loose fitting." First I made one out of blue/white checked seersucker, then green/ivory striped linen, and lastly this jacquard cotton. I love the crispness (but not stiffness) of this fabric. Of course, the linen really looks nice, too. At any rate, I made the pattern 8 inches shorter than called for, so it's high-hip length, as opposed to tunic, and I added six vertical darts, four in front and two in back. I also made a double yoke and added shoulder pads (as is always necessary for my Cocker Spaniel shoulders). I dipped it just slightly in the front and back at the hemline, so it isn't just a straight line across the hips, and used the view that has side slits. I deleted the cuffs and folded up the sleeve pattern piece 4 inches, so it's a loose 3/4 sleeve that can be rolled, if I like. It goes together very quickly. I like it because, with the darts added, it's got some shape to it, yet it's plenty loose that it will be cool this summer. I tried to get the color of the fabric as true as I could in the photo. It's a pretty pinkish beige or mauve color, with a slight sheen to it.

I used this fabric to make a pair of ankle length "bloomers," using Butterick 3737. If you're familiar with the Sewing Workshop "panel pant" pattern, these are somewhat similar, but I actually like them better, because the panel pants are REALLY baggy, whereas these are just comfortably loose. I washed the linen at least two times before cutting. (Usually I wash three times, for residual shrinkage, so I'm guessing I did in this instance, too, but I don't specifically remember.) Layout was fast and easy, since I could use the stripes as a go-by for my grainline. Since I didn't have any decent lace on hand for the hem (and didn't want to wait around until I did), I made a 4-inch bias ruffle for the bottom of the pants legs instead. Linen being as pliable as it is, it worked great, and I liked the way the stripes played around the bias ruffle. The pattern called for a set-in waistband, but I used elastic instead. Why would I make a pair of bloomers, I thought, and then have a set-in waistband? I used French seams throughout. I was in a hurry (for no particular reason, other than my nature :o) so I didn't line these, but now that they're done, I wish I had, because I really like them. You can't actually see through the fabric, but I would just feel more comfortable in white pants that were lined. Nothing to fret over, though, as I have lots more fabric to try out. (There's an understatement worthy of at least an honorable mention, if not the blue ribbon to beat all blue ribbons.) The next pair will be made with the mahogany heavyweight linen that I recently bought, and I may even make some out of navy wool crepe. (Nautical is "in" this spring!) The linen works very well for this pattern, and I will line my next pair, just to cut down on wrinkling and because I like the way the lining feels against your skin. I normally line with Ambiance or china silk. I hope you'll consider posting your pieces as you complete them, too. It's a lot of fun, easy, and I'd love to see what everybody else is making!

I used this beautiful jacquard weave linen to make this jacket (Bill Blass designer, Vogue pattern). To accompany the jacket, I made a sheath dress out of wool crepe. The antique pink shade of the wool crepe matched the pink in the linen perfectly. At the time, you had two coordinating linens, and you can see that I used the coordinating piece for the yoke. I covered the buttons with the wool crepe. Now I'm getting ready to order more of this fabric to make a pair of overalls. How's that for one extreme to the other! It's perefct for both, though, as it's a nice suit weight. For the jacket, I didn't prewash. For the overalls, I will. Thanks for bringing us such beautiful fabrics from which to choose. Annette

I've opted for fitted low-necked white 100% linen smock and the slashes in the under sleeves are stitched in place so it's not necessary to constantly be pulling them through. I believe they did this in period- if you look at her wrist closely in the portrait you can see the smock sleeve is narrow and fitted and the ruffle/cuff is wider and lightly gathered to fit the wrist, but the under sleeves are wider than the smock sleeve even at the wrist, suggesting that the under sleeve did have faux slashes. The neckline is accented with hand-done blanket stitching (Although hard to see in this size picture of the portrait, her chemise neckline is the same as Jane Seymour's below. The cuff was gathered to the smock and the cuff hem was finished by hand so as no machine stitching was visible. The smock itself was made based on instructions on Drea Leed's site, with dropped shoulders and underarm and hip gores.
